Trenton-Morrisville Route 1 Toll Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Project Location: US Route 1 Toll Bridge over the Delaware River between Trenton, NJ and Morrisville, PA

Notice to Proceed: November 16, 2006
Construction Start: November 27, 2006
Complete Construction: December 2009

Project Work Items
Route 1 Toll Bridge

  • Rehabilitate, clean and repaint bridge’s structural steel components
  • Widen to include a northbound auxiliary lane
  • Complete re-decking
  • Upgrades to bridge signing and lighting systems

Route 1 Bridge Approach - Pennsylvania

  • Construct new Toll Plaza and access tunnel
  • Install noise along northbound approach and at northbound on-ramp from Morrisville
  • Widen northbound structure over Delaware Canal/Conrail to provide deceleration lane for northbound off-ramp to South Pennsylvania Avenue (Morrisville)
  • Reconstruct Route 1 pavement
  • Realign northbound off and on-ramps at South Pennsylvania Avenue (Morrisville)
  • Install new traffic signals at South Pennsylvania Avenue and the northbound on-off ramps and resurface South Pennsylvania
  • Avenue between Green and Market Streets
  • Rehabilitate, clean and repaint structural steel components of Route 1 approach bridges

Route 1 Bridge Approach – New Jersey

  • Reconstruct northbound off-ramp to NJ 29 to align with new auxiliary lane
  • Modify and widen Warren Street southbound on-ramp
  • Reconstruct Route 1 pavement
  • Rehabilitate, clean and repaint structural steel components of Route 1 approach bridges

Year Built: 1952 – four lanes wide
Modified: 1964 – widened to six lanes
Modified: 1983 – median barrier installed, capacity to 5 lanes
Length: 1,324 feet
Width: 62 foot cartway, no sidewalks

Toll: $.75 Southbound Only

Work Zone Limits: From south side of the viaduct over the Delaware Canal and Conrail in Morrisville to about 500 feet north of the South Broad Street overpass in Trenton

Work Zone Length: Approx. 6,500 feet

Rush Hour Open Lane Schedule
Two Lanes Northbound: M-F 5:30 am to 9:30 am
Two Lanes Northbound & Southbound: M-F 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Two Lanes Northbound: Sat. Noon to 5 pm

  • Minimum one lane open in both directions at all other times
  • Minimum four toll booths open southbound during peak periods as noted in Open Lane Schedule

Construction Staging

Prep Stage: Place signing & environmental controls, Remove and reinforce median
Stage 1: Reconstruct, widen Route 1 northbound, Construct New Toll Plaza
Stage 2: Reconstruct Route 1 southbound
Stage 3: Reconstruct Route 1 center area
Final Stage: Bridge painting, landscaping, cleanup, misc.

Prep Stage:
November 2006 to February 2007
Stage 1: February 2007 to March 2008
Stage 2: March 2008 to January 2009
Stage 3: February 2009 to September 2009
Final Stage: October 2009 to December 2009

Construction Bid Amount: $87,179,731

Total Project Cost:  $100 million + (Includes fees for engineering, construction inspection, utilities)
